Japan’s reactor used technology from the 50’s. As much as I appreciate cars from that decade, I’m glad that cars nowadays are much safer.
In the same token, nuclear energy cannot be written off because early attempts worked badly, and bad they are.
The problem is that instead of taking a look at viable nuclear technologies, fear will paralyze any actual development of new technologies stateside. But in other places, alternatives are being sought after, like thorium reactors.

Yes, I think it is, PROVIDED the sites are kept current, well maintained, and actively monitored 24/7/365 by well trained people. And by maintained I mean in ALL aspects of the facility.
